A Photo A Day – Tropical House Gecko

Found a little gecko in my room today. I’m almost 100% sure that this is the same lizard that crept into my room two weeks ago.

He’s kind of cute. The little guy is actually a tropical house gecko, Hemidactylus mabouia. These geckos are native to Africa but has been introduced to the Western continents. As a result they’re pretty common around Florida.
The interesting thing is that these guys are considered the most predacious of geckos because they are known to eat anole hatchlings or small geckos. Not so cute anymore.

Another interesting fact is that these little guys will become a darker color – a gray or tan – in the daylight but become this pale color at night.

I counted the number of chevrons on his tail, just in case that’s a distinctive feature and will help me recognize him the next time he decides to visit.
